What is Samsung Gear VR?
Samsung Gear VR is a virtual reality product from Samsung. It is a headset which acts as a shell and houses the Samsung Note 4. The Note 4 is used for its accelerometer, processor and the super high definition screen. The screen is split in to two images (one for each eye). Combined with the lenses of the Gear VR, this then creates an immersive environment akin to the Oculus Rift.
Apps can be downloaded to the Note 4 as you would do on a regular mobile phone. Currently there aren't many apps available due to the headset only just being announced and not being released until mid-late next year (2015), but we can expect to see entertainment apps such as a cinema app (currently included) and many shopping apps.
Why is it a Big Deal?
Since the Facebook acquisition of OculusVR, virtual reality has been pushed in to the pubic spot light. Now, one of the worlds largest technology hardware companies is launching a consumer piece of virtual reality hardware, placing vr into the hands of mainstream consumers.
This is another step on the road to making virtual reality the norm. We predict other mobile phone companies launching similar shells to turn their phones into virtual reality headsets. Samsung currently have the upper hand as they worked with OculusVR to produce this bit of kit and are the first out of the gate with a high-end, working consumer product.
