Look out Omni
Virtualizer from Cyberith is the latest platform to allow users to travel on the spot. Unlike the Omni Treadmill, the Virtualizer is practically silent when in use thanks to the almost frictionless base plate. Sensors in the base plate detect your feet, while sensors in the pillars track your vertical position allowing you to simulate movement with out the aid of a visual tracking system such as Microsoft's Kinect.
The silent feature of this product will be a major selling point for those comparing the Virtualizer to the Omni Treadmill. Jumping is also promoted as the base is flat and harness has vertical freedom unlike the Omni's concave base and fixed harness at waist height.
While you can pre-order the Omni Treadmil now for $499, there is no mention of the price, although they do state the Virtualizer will be 'affordable'. We look forward to their announcements.
Virtualizer will be released on Kickstarter on July 23rd.
